Healthy Eating the Mediterranean Way

There is no single definition for how to eat the Mediterranean way, but it is traditionally a diet that includes lots of vegetables, fruits, whole grains, beans, nuts, seeds and healthy fats, such as olive oil. A Mediterranean-style diet has limited intake of red meat, but includes other protein sources such as fish, eggs, poultry and beans. Overall, this way of eating has been shown to promote health and prevent chronic diseases, such as heart disease.

During this webinar, Valerie Machinist, Manager of Nutrition Services at Community Servings and a registered dietician with over 20 years of experience as a dietician, nutritionist and health educator, will review the basics of eating a Mediterranean-style diet, as well as demonstrate how preparing these healthy foods can be simple and affordable.

Understanding and Enjoying Play with Your Child

Host: Sarah Scott Dooling, MSW, LCSW and Registered Play Therapist

After an 8 (or 10!) hour day, it can be tough to get on the floor - though you always do - and enthusiastically consume the pretend bowl of spaghetti your child has lovingly prepared for you.

For children, play is a serious and purposeful activity. Play helps children identify and express feelings, develop new and creative solutions to problems, learn and practice ways to self-soothe and regulate emotions, and cultivate empathy and respect for the thoughts and feelings of others. Play is also an invaluable tool in addressing the complicated manifestations of toxic stress in children (for example, helping them navigate a global pandemic).

Parents know play is important, but don’t always have the time to fully explore the enriching and nurturing power of play – for their children and themselves. This exploratory and FUN workshop will provide a “boost” for parents looking to structure engaging and enjoyable play time.
